Insurance live transfers vs. leads: which should your agency buy?

How insurance live transfers, exclusive leads and shared leads differ in cost, speed and producer time, and how to choose the right mix for your agency.

Three ways agencies buy prospects

  • Shared internet leads: a consumer's details sold to several agencies at once. Cheapest per lead, most competitive.
  • Exclusive leads: contact data sold to one agency. Less competition, but your team still has to reach the consumer.
  • Live transfers: the consumer is screened on a call and connected to your producer in real time. Highest price per unit, least producer dialing.

The cost that matters is cost per bound policy

Comparing price per lead with price per transfer is misleading. A cheap lead that is never reached costs your producer's time and earns nothing. To compare fairly, track each source through contact rate, quote rate and bind rate, then divide total spend by policies bound. Include producer hours, because time spent dialing is a real cost.

When leads make more sense

Leads can work well if you have a dedicated inside sales person or dialer, a fast speed-to-lead process (calling within minutes), and the discipline for multi-touch follow-up over several days. Agencies with that machine can turn lower-cost leads into strong results.

When live transfers make more sense

Transfers suit agencies where producers should be quoting, not dialing: small teams, new producers who need consistent activity, and agencies that cannot staff fast follow-up. Because the consumer is already in conversation, the producer's time goes straight to quoting.

Questions to ask whichever you buy

  • Is it exclusive, and how is exclusivity enforced?
  • How was consent captured, and can you produce the consent record for any contact?
  • How are DNC and litigator lists scrubbed?
  • What screening happens before delivery or transfer?
  • What is the return or credit policy for invalid contacts?

A practical mix

Many agencies run both: transfers to keep producers busy during peak hours, and leads or aged-quote calling to fill gaps. Start with a small pilot of each, measure cost per bind for 30 to 60 days, then shift budget toward what binds. If you want to test transfers, see our auto insurance live transfers program.
